FAQ
Questions we get asked before an order
General
- What is a module mounting structure (MMS)?
- The steel or aluminium framework that holds solar modules at the design tilt and transfers wind, dead and seismic loads to the foundation or the roof. In India it is usually galvanised cold-formed steel.
- Do you weld on site?
- No. Sections are punched at the works and bolted on site with SS304 fasteners. This keeps the galvanising intact and lets an ordinary crew assemble from the drawing.
Materials
- GI or HDG: which should I specify?
- Pre-galvanised (GI) coil at [275] gsm suits most inland sites and keeps cost down. Hot-dip galvanising after fabrication to IS 4759 gives a thicker coating and protects cut edges, and is the better choice near the coast or in industrial atmospheres.
Engineering
- Which IS codes apply to solar structure design?
- IS 875 Part 3 for wind loads, IS 800 for steel design, IS 2062 for structural steel, IS 277 and IS 4759 for galvanising, and IS 1893 where seismic checks are required.
- What wind speed do you design for?
- The basic wind speed for the site from the IS 875 Part 3 zone map, between 33 and 55 m/s, adjusted for terrain, height and structure class. The design report states the figures used.
Rooftop
- Can a metal sheet roof carry solar modules?
- Usually, but it must be checked. We calculate the added dead and wind load and check the existing purlins before quoting a Tecta system.
Ground mount
- What foundation does a ground mount need?
- Driven posts where the soil allows, otherwise PCC ballast blocks or piles with a cap. The soil report decides.
Carport
- How much clearance does a solar carport need?
- Typically [2.4] m for cars and [4.5] m for buses and trucks. The column grid follows the bay layout.
Ordering
- What do you need to quote?
- Site layout, module datasheet, roof or soil information, and the location for the wind zone. Send them through the contact page.
- How long do drawings take?
- General arrangement and foundation drawings within [3] working days of receiving the inputs.
